Halloween // Are there things I should avoid when dressing as a pirate?

Hey! I was thinking of making a pirate costume for halloween or for general fun. My friends are really into cosplay and it's fueling the creativity in me.

I was wondering: Are there things I should avoid doing? Are there easy mistakes that should be avoided? Maybe things that are historically inappropriate or cultural appropriation, or that would be disrespectful?

I want to be sure before I start sewing and designing! I appreciate all the help and advice!
