Halloween // I need a clown costume

I've been invited to a Halloween party in early October and the dress code is "come as your own clown". I don't have the biggest exposure to pop culture, so I'm at a bit of a loss.

I would love to make a costume from scratch (aka from existing clothing pieces cobbled together). I have magenta hair and would like to tie in magenta and black for a more goth/dark/scary vibe. I'm a 5'5 woman if that helps at all.

Currently I'm thinking a black puff sleeve top with pompoms, and a magenta/black ombre handkerchief hem skirt, with half striped half diamond tights, a black tulle ruff, and a mesh long sleeve top for warmth. It feels a little lackluster and I would love any sort of inspiration or suggestions that might help!

My only inspiration so far is Moxxi from Borderlands, but I haven't played enough of the game to feel comfortable going as her. I love the steampunk/jester vibes she gives off. I also like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, but that's far too popular of a costume and I'd like something more original.
