Not sure if this is the best sub to post this on, but I couldn't think if another. If y'all have a suggestion, let me know please.
I am a white male. For Halloween this year, I wanted to dress as Candyman, one of my favorite horror characters from, probably, my favorite horror movie.
In case anyone is unaware, Candyman is a character from the 1992 film of the same name. He is played by the amazing Tony Todd. The character of Candyman is a former slave who was killed by white townsfolk for falling in love with a white woman. They sawed off his hand and killed him by spreading honey over his body so bees would sting him to death. He is now a spirit who appears after you say is name five times in a mirror. He wears a long fur-lined coat and has a hook where his hand once was.
Obviously, I wouldn't do any black face or anything like that. Just the hook hand and long coat and all that.
Would anyone see that as racist since not only is the character a diffrent race than I am, but Candyman himself is very much linked to slavery and the oppression of black people?
