Horror hosts have been a staple for decades. Zacherle, Vampira, Elvira, Svengoolie. It currently seems we are in a renascence of hosted horror movies? Everywhere you look these days, there's someone hosting a horror movie. I've always gotten Halloween vibes from these shows. Even during the off season.
Here are the shows I've found, so far, that are broadcast nationally, or can be streamed online.
- Elvira. Duh! National. Still shows up occasionally. Recently on Netflix and Shudder.
- Svengoolie. National. Cable and broadcast on MeTV. If you can't get MeTV locally, and have Roku, add the 'F2V TV' app to your Roku, click on 'Exclusives', click on 'MeTV | WJLP A or B'. This is an east coast feed.
- The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. National. On Shudder. You may remember Joe bob from MonterVision on TNT? He's back! And he's still badass, showing some of the classic horror movies that are so bad, they're good. Currently on the 4th season, he's joined by Darcy the Mailgirl, who is even more badass than him.
- Count Gore de Vol. Washington D.C./Maryland. The longest running horror host still on the air. He even predates Svengoolie and Elvira! You can watch his show on his website, in the Lab section. Generally a new movie every other Saturday. A lot of reruns from his earlier years.
- New Castle After Dark. New Castle, Pennsylvania. These guys actually have some pretty good movies. How? Without takedowns? I don't know. They are pretty laid back, drinking craft beer and smoking cigars. Click on 'Videos' and choose your movie. Or watch them in order?
A couple shows I just found...
- Horror Hotel with Lamia. Cleveland, Ohio. Same lousy movies everyone else shows but the hostess is alluring, in an Elvira sort of way. Cute as hell but her fangs look too fake, but that may be part of the schtick. Supporting characters and skits are fun. You can watch on Retro TV (also found on the 'F2V TV' app), or catch the last four episodes here.
- Creature Features SF. San Francisco/Bay Area. Available in other areas and online. This is the successor to the show put on by Bob Wilkins in the 70’s, one of the most famous horror hosts ever. The current host and supporting characters are top notch. Production values are right there with Svengoolie and Last Drive-in. Easiest way to watch is binging the playlist on YouTube.
I hope you guys enjoy these. If anyone else knows of any other shows available online or streaming, let us know in the comments.
