Halloween // Why Halloween is the best holiday imo

For a long time since I was a child, I’ve always felt that Halloween was the most interesting and fun holiday out of the year. When I was a kid it was obviously the whole going out at night and getting free candy, but over the years especially once I started to go into adulthood did I realize what really made the holiday so special in my eyes:

  1. You can be whatever you want without public judgement.

With costumes and a general lack of mannered expectations that are present in other holidays (at thanksgiving you have to cook food and eat with family, with Christmas you have to buy presents and do some annoying traditions or else you’re seen as a bad person) Halloween’s only real expectation is that some homeowners should buy cheap candy for trick or treaters but even then if you don’t want to do that it’s not really a big deal. Halloween is a night for you to let loose and have fun. It’s truly a time where you can do basically anything as long as it’s not illegal.

  1. It’s a holiday that is celebrated at night

Most holidays are celebrated during day time and thus Halloween being Hallow’s eve and technically doesn’t end until midnight makes for a holiday where you could be working/going to school during the day and celebrating the holiday when you get home, go to a party, or whatever. This is also why I tend to like the Fourth of July and new year’s eve as well.

  1. It’s the best holiday if you are a fan of any kind of horror

If you are fascinated with horror characters going from Dracula to Michael Myers then Halloween and the month of October in general is the best time of the year for you. It gives you excuses to do horror movie marathons, to dress up as them, to go to haunted houses, to allow yourself to experience the thrill of being scared.

  1. The aesthetic of Halloween is awesome for art enthusiasts If you’re an artist or a fan of creative work, then October and Halloween are some of the best times to indulge in Halloween based artwork, songs, music, paintings, decor, books, etc. There is a treasure trove of content for creatively inclined people.

  2. It’s a holiday that touches primal qualities about human beings. Halloween as a holiday in a way brings to light something that all human beings have: Fear. Werewolves, vampires, witches, spiders, demons, zombies are all creatures that have historically have been meant to instill fear in us whether they be fictional or non fictional. It’s a time for people to let go fear and embrace and love what may have once gave us fear.I realize that more as I get older and what I used to be scared of as a child on Halloween, I now love dearly and enjoy. Instead of hunting down people we think are evil or scary, we now celebrate it. Instead of being appalled and hateful of what we traditionally have been scared of, we now gain unique pleasure from. To be able to express one’s self openly without fear, to show that even if you think you’re alone in your weirdness you’re not alone is something that I think truly embodies what I love about Halloween.
