I’m not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but I really can’t figure this out myself.
On insta, a fair complexion child wanted to dress as Moana and people were going bat sh*t crazy that the mother should not let the child dress as Moana as it would be cultural appropriation, inappropriate and the child should dress as a fair complexion princess. However, I do not see this as wrong as long as they don’t do it in an offensive manner, for example doing blackface, which the child didn’t have. Recently, I’ve seen a dark complexion woman dress as Aurora, a fair complexion princess, but no one had a problem with that, again, she didn’t make her face look white or any of the sort.
It really seems like double standards to me that one is cursed out and the other isn’t.
I was wondering if someone could explain, how one is ok to do so but the other isn’t. Especially when they’re fictional characters. I’m not sure whether i’m missing the point of why white children can’t dress as black, brown fictional characters as long as it’s not racist or offensive.
