Halloween // Starting Halloween village from scratch!

I want to put together a Halloween village. So far, it looks like the main makers are Lemax and Department 56. Who likes which and why? Are there others I should look at?

Edited to add: I prefer not to have writing all over the decoration and I'm more of a spooky versus gory Halloween fan.
