I, like many others, are worried that trick or treating will not be in the cards this year. Which will be really unfortunate considering it is a Saturday. Here are some thoughts and tips on how we can still have trick or treat.
Handing out candy.
- Clearly post a sign on your door or window that you still welcome trick or treating.
- wear gloves and mask while handing out candy.
- don't allow kids to grab candy put it in the bag or pail for them.
- Alternative - leave a bowl out with maybe 10 pieces of candy, wiping down the bowl and adding ten more pieces every hour or as needed. This is a great no contact solution and also stops kids from taking the whole bowl. Additionally, you might want to have a sign stating
"We are home but Due to covid-19 please take one, Happy Halloween."
As a trick or treater
- Have a face covering and gloves. Costume gloves and masks should be fine as long as you can wash them after trick or treating.
- have hand sanitizer with you and use it after ringing doorbells and knocking on doors.
- Go with one or two other people. No large groups but don't go out alone.
- Use a disposable bag for trick or treating that can be thrown out after.
- Wipe down candy with a wet cloth and safe soap. All candy should be wrapped anyway so wiping the packaging down should not affect the contents.
- Only take one if someone has left candy out, don't ruin it for everyone.
If you have additional tips on how to keep yourself and the kids safe please post in comments.
If you find this material useful send it to your local officials so they don't flat out cancel trick or treating in your town.
